 Christmas Tree Recycling

Ever wonder what to do with your Christmas tree after the holiday is over?  We have a recommendation – recycle it!  Between December 27, 2004 and January 7, 2005, BFI/Allied Waste Services will be collecting your Christmas trees curbside.

It’s quick and easy. And, it saves space in the landfill. To recycle your Christmas tree, remove the tree stand, lights, and all ornaments and decorations. Trees should be cut into 4-foot lengths and placed next to trash cans on your regular collection day. Wreaths can also be recycled provided all decorations and wires have been removed. The trees and wreaths will go into the wood waste recycling area at Ada County’s Hidden Hollow Sanitary Landfill where they will be ground into wood chips for use as soil amendment or ground cover.  For more information about this recycling opportunity, contact the City of Boise Public Works Department at 384-3901.

'Sharps in the Trash'
BFI/Allied Waste Services Asks Residents to Help Prevent Injury

Each day, countless residents dispose of sharp objects in their trash.  As the garbage collectors maneuver your trash into the truck, these ‘sharps’ can cause serious injury if not properly prepared.  BFI/Allied Waste Services asks residents to take steps to protect employees from injury.  Sharp objects that can cause injury include:

  • Glass (bulbs, window panes, glassware)

  • Ceramics (dishes, toilets)

  • Needles

  • Metal with sharp edges

If you plan to dispose of sharp objects, please place the item in a heavy cardboard  box or thick plastic container with a cap or lid.  Please do not place it in a plastic bag, as the sharp edges may cut through the bag and cause injury.  If you have questions on how to help protect your garbage collector, please call BFI/Allied Waste Services at 345-1265.

America Recycles Day
November 15, 2004

BFI/Allied Waste Services and Boise City will again partner to celebrate America Recycles Day.  A school-age art contest (K-6) will be offered with the prizes ranging from gift certificates to a shiny, new bicycle.  Kids should inquire early with their teachers to see if their class is participating in this event.  (The event is open to all Boise area school-age kids.)

Call Jennie Rylee, Boise City Public Works, at 384-3906 for more information.
