Middleton

BFI/Allied Waste Services strives to provide seamless trash collection service to Middleton residents.

Garbage Collection Guidelines
Residential solid waste service is mandatory in the City of Middleton.  Garbage is collected one time per week.  All residents have been provided with a 95-gallon BFI/Allied Waste Services wheeled cart and are asked to put their first 95-gallons of trash and yard waste in this container. All trash must be visible and accessible to the driver.

Use the Right Container
All trash must be in containers or bags to keep odors in and animals out.  A closed container will prevent tampering by pets, minimize odors, and block rainwater.

  • Wheeled carts

  • Trash cans with lids

  • Plastic garbage bags, tightly closed

Please do not set trash out in paper grocery bags or cardboard boxes - these make a big mess if the bottoms fall out.

Limit Size and Weight of Containers
BFI/Allied Waste Services provided wheeled carts are limited to 95 gallons and may not exceed 250 pounds.  For driver safety, additional container must be between 20 and 35 gallons and can be no heavier than 60 pounds.

 Collection Requirements

  • Trash and recycling must be set out by 6:00 am.

  • All containers must be removed from the curbside within 24 hours.

  • No hazardous materials, fluorescent light tubes, paint or vehicle batteries are collected curbside.

  • Make sure drivers have safe and convenient access to containers.

  • Do not set trash containers close to obstructions such as mailboxes, fire hydrants, parked cars, or utility poles.

  • Do not block sidewalks with cans or bags.

  • Do not overload containers or pack them so tightly that trash are difficult to remove.

  • Wheeled carts should be placed at the curb line with lid hinges pointing away from the street.

  • Trees and branches must be cut to less than 4' in length and placed next to your garbage can on your regular collection day.
  • No sod, dirt or rocks, please.

Blue Bin Recycling Guidelines
Recycling is included in residential solid waste service.  Every household that signs up for service is provided with a blue recycling bin.  Recycling is collected by a separate truck on the same day as garbage. The bin remains the property of BFI/Allied Waste Services. To replace a broken or damaged bin, call BFI/Allied Waste Services at 345-1265.

Recycling Collection Requirements
In order to keep costs down, recyclables must be sorted.

Use Separate Paper Bags to Sort These Items in Your Bin

  • Newspapers (including inserts), magazines, and catalogs.

  • Metals:  Cans (Rinse empty cans - labels are okay - aerosol cans must be empty - pesticide cans are prohibited), pie tins (rinsed), wire hangers (stripped of foam and paper).

  • Mixed Paper (junk mail, white or pastel ledger, cereal and frozen food boxes, paper bags, envelopes, fax paper, computer paper, brochures, greeting cards and wrapping paper without foil, construction paper.)

  • Plastics. All household plastics (1 through 7) except for plastic bags, motor oil jugs, and pesticide containers.

  • Corrugated cardboard. Break boxes down to less than 4x4' and place under or next to bin.

Glass is not collected curbside. Clear or colored glass may be recycled at area recycling centers.

Other Curbside Recycling Opportunities Include

Used Motor Oil
BFI/Allied Waste Services will collect up to 2 gallons of used motor oil per household per week. Do not mix with other fluids, such as brake or transmission fluid or gasoline. Use transparent, 1-gallon plastic jugs. Set containers next to (not inside) recycling bin. Label container “USED MOTOR OIL.” Write “SAVE” on the container for reuse.

Appliances
BFI/Allied Waste Services provides twice-weekly collection of appliances.  Freon is safely removed and appliances are delivered to a local processor for recycling of metal.

A collection fee will be assessed for all appliance collections.

Appliances must be outside and visible to the driver.  Call BFI/Allied Waste Services at 345-1265 to arrange for a special pick-up.

Christmas Trees
Recycle your Christmas tree each holiday season at no additional charge.  Remove lights, tree stand, tinsel and ornaments.  Cut to 4' lengths and place next to your trash cans on your usual collection day.
